Well, I didn’t get this job, for exactly the reason I thought I might not, they chose someone with more experience. They said they really liked my interview though, and even said I was selling myself short on part of my application, so I went back over that again and updated it some more.

I have another interview July 11th, and the job I would really love to get on campus just opened up again and it’s listing doesn’t close till the end of July. So I won’t hear back about that one until August sometime probably.

Winding Down June

winding-down-june

Saturday I spent in the day in the bay area with my pirate and friends. We went to Lychee Garden in SF for my first dim sum ever. I wasn’t really impressed with it, and they didn’t have the one thing I really wanted, just the plan bao rolls. They only had the pork bao. After that we went to Daiso in Daly City. It’s basically a Japanse 100 yen store, only over here it’s all $1.50. I managed to find $77 worth of $1.50 items, though I think that’s with tax. After that we headed over to Pao-sama’s place in Redwood City for a bbq. We sat around talking and eating and didn’t get home till 2am.

Sunday I got some chores done, but mostly it was making up for lost sleep day.

Monday I think my interview went pretty well, and I’m supposed to hear back by the end of the week.

Tuesday we went to $1 cone night and then to see Surf’s Up. It was good, but the previews beforehand were horrifyingly bad. (Daddy Day Camp, Under Dog, Bratz) I threw together some chicken and pasta for us to have afterwards.

Tonight I hope to get some shopping done at IKEA and Target to help with the cleaning/organizing I want to do before my party this weekend. I have everything ordered for delivery from Safeway on Saturday morning, so I just have cleaning left to do.

Tomorrow night should be climbing, and then a friend’s party on friday since he’s leaving for his summer internship soon. I might as well get my socializing in while I still have the time and energy!

Interview!

interview

I have my first one Monday. And I got a call about another one that will be set up soon. Things are moving along. And even if I don’t get either of these… I’ve filled out 88 applications so far. I’ll get something sooner or later! :D

Mid June

mid-june

We went climbing on Monday. I’m up to the 5.8 routes at the ARC (which I’ve been told are rated much higher than they would be in the real world). I’m now at the point where I actually need to work on muscle strength for at least one of the routes I got stuck on. But the weight training is progressing, so that should help. We went back to my place for dinner. I cooked chicken with havarti with rice-a-roni on the side and heated up the sauteed carrots I’d made earlier.

Tuesday night I mostly caught up on sleep, but I also got some freelance work in.

Wednesday and Thursday I went to lunch with my pirate & his crew. Wednesday night I made a double batch of my everything cookies. Half I gave to our climbing buddy after his graduation (Ph.D) that we went to on Thursday. The other half I’m saving for the bbq tomorrow. We had fun at his house after his graduation, hanging out and eating fruit and snacks and bbq’d steaks.

Today I have to “volunteer” at the College undergraduate graduation ceremony, but they’re feeding us lunch beforehand at least. I just have to pass out programs so I don’t think I’ll have to stay through the whole thing thankfully.

Tomorrow I go with my pirate to get out hair cut, then to our friend’s bbq. Sunday I hope to get some cleaning done and take pictures or scans of stuff to sell on Curlie Q

Pirates & Weddings

Saturday I went to see Pirates 3 with my pirate. <3 <3 <3

Sunday we went to my future step-sister’s wedding. It was actually pretty fun, the ceremony was short, sweet and funny (the bride asking for a “Do over.” on repeating the vows) and the reception was fun. We did some dancing, had some food, and then headed home.

movies-meals

My brother came to visit (though we didn’t get to go see out dad this weekend like originally planned). We’ve mostly been hanging out and watching movies. We did have dinner at Sudwerks (yum!) with MM on Saturday, and today we went to see Shrek 3 with my climbing buddy. We were going to go climbing afterwards, but the climbing wall was closed for some event.

Why I want to telecommute

Or work half time for twice the pay (same net take home). From all the readily available work on this topic, I don’t think I’m alone in wanting to break free from being a wage slave. I want to be paid for my work, not for the time my butt is stuck in an office.

His 21st-century counterparts are an army of product researchers, academics and personal improvement gurus, who all agree we are frittering valuable minutes, hours and even entire days, though they can’t agree on how many.

American workers, on average, spend 45 hours a week at work, but describe 16 of those hours as “unproductive,” according to a study by Microsoft. America Online and Salary.com, in turn, determined that workers actually work a total of three days a week, wasting the other two. And Steve Pavlina, whose Web site (stevepavlina.com) describes him as a “personal development expert” and who keeps incremental logs of how he spends each working day, urging others to do the same, finds that we actually work only about 1.5 hours a day.

We are wasting time because we are working harder.

“The longer you work, the less efficient you are,” said Bob Kustka, the founder of Fusion Factor, a productivity and time-management consulting firm in Norwell, Mass. He says workers are like athletes in that they are most efficient in concentrated bursts.

And:

“The old thinking says ‘the longer it takes, the harder you’re working,” says Lynne Lancaster, a founder of BridgeWorks, a business consulting firm. “The new thinking is ‘if I know the job inside and out and I’m done faster than everyone else then why can’t I go home early?’ ”

And:

At the headquarters of Best Buy in Minneapolis, for instance, the hot policy of the moment is called ROWE, short for Results Only Work Environment.

There workers can come in at four or leave at noon, or head for the movies in the middle of the day, or not even show up at all. It’s the work that matters, not the method. And, not incidentally, both output and job satisfaction have jumped wherever ROWE is tried.

Love and Respect

love-and-respect

From one of the columns I read regularly:

“Small moments of courtesy, gentleness and all that good stuff that rounds out your life together is the carefulness I have in mind. “Company manners” is one way to describe my idea of carefulness in love. To be used every single day, so it becomes normalcy. When love and respect are everyday parts of the relationship, careful relating is a seamless result.”

From:
Handle With Care
on Single File by Susan Deitz

That really captures my thoughts about why my friends and family are the ones I should treat with the most courtesy, be the most polite to. It’s a way of showing my respect and appreciation for them. But also, its the kind of person I want to be. I want to be able to show respect to any and all that I meet, and if I don’t practice it daily, with those who surround me, then it won’t come naturally.
