postcards

I’m almost done designing the Save the Dates, so I hope to get those printed and mailed sometime this week. I’m not getting them out as early as I’d hoped so I need to call my aunts and uncle and remind them about my wedding next year before they make Thanksgiving plans.

This weekend I got a bunch more stuff cleaned up and reorganized at home. We need to pick up the wifi dongle that we think is at my future-in-laws place so I can relocate the computer desk.

We had a chance to go to Disneyland on Saturday, but as tired as I was all last week, and this weekend, and still some this week, it’s good I stayed home to rest. Plus I messed up and read my calendar wrong for one of my medications so I’ve been all hormonal last week and this weekend. Definitely not a good time to be traveling and dealing with crowds.

We had the Primerica guy out with our “FNA” Financial Needs Analysis. It was fairly interesting and we’re basically on track with where I want to be. The mutual funds and bond funds he gave us info on seem interesting, so we’re going to run that by my pirate’s dad and see what he thinks. Most of what I read online about them is that their products are fairly standard, but to avoid their “work part time for more money” offer since they’re basically yet another multi-level-marketing corp (like Amway/Quixtar).

Email cleaning:
July 3rd I got to hang out with MM, JL and a few other folks at MM’s new place. AP unfortunately had to work. We were in the bay for the Fourth of July, so we got together that night to play board games and hang out. Good times as always with that crew.

New Miyazaki movie to look forward to: Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea, which will be released in Japan in July, 2008.

My pirate sent me this article June 27:
Explosive Art: Explosive Art Created With Rocket Fuel, Gunpowder, Propellants and Bullets
Someone I know happens to work at the SCAD, so I forward it to them and got this great response:
“I remember receiving his purchase requisition for that rocket fuel and a couple rounds for that uzi. It was fun explaining that one to the VP for Financing”
Now that’s what I call an interesting day at work!

Fourth of July weekend I think is also when we went to see the San Francisco Theological Seminary - really nice location but not one that would work for us. Great for an outdoor spring or summer wedding though! And I think this might also be when we stopped in SF and found my wedding dress?

Mom’s wedding shower was in June, I think I blogged about that already, but if not, my new step-sister helped host it and was really awesome. We had it at her place and she was a huge help in making it such a success.

My pirate’s cousin’s daughter’s (is that second cousin?) birthday was in June (I think?) and we put together a pot of colorful flowers for her. CE (his cousin’s wife) also started taking massage certification courses, so we got to be practice dummies, which was wonderful.

July my cousin JH was down for a martial arts convention (where he passed his black belt test!) so we drove to the bay area to meet up and hang out. We stopped by a Starbucks to get drinks and chat for a while, and then we decided to see Hancock, which I really enjoyed. It definitely had some interesting twists.

PSA: If you use Gmail - go to Settings (upper right corner) then scroll to the bottom and select the option to always use HTTPS and save your settings. This forces gmail to always use the encrypted https instead of http (which leaves it open to attack).

August 18th Cookie was constipated really badly (which can signal serious health problems in a cat) so we took her to the vet the next day and a few time afterwards for more test. Turns out that her kidneys are starting to fail from old age as she’s almost 9 or 10 and her breed (Snowshoe) on average live only 10-14 years instead of 18. :( So she’s now on a special diet and gets fed separately from the other guys. So she’s put weight back on which is good, and next month when they all go in for their annual check we’ll do a blood test to see how she’s doing.

September 20th was a bit crazy. I helped set up JG’s bridal shower (and then attended of course) then drove home to grab my pirate and we were off to the bay area for a BBQ and games with MM, JL, AP and gang. So super busy, but a ton of fun that day too.

Then the 26th both my parents and my brother came to visit and celebrate my brothers birthday. Then my pirates folks joined us for lunch on the 27th to meet my dad & his wife. That night was JG’s bachelorette party, then the next day was Peanut’s baby shower. Whew! Talk about a non-stop weekend.

I baked everything cookies (3 batches!) as birthday gifts… I was so tired by the last batch though that I forgot to add any of the sugar. And it turns out that the brown sugar is a key ingredient for the shape and texture - it’s what lets the cookies spread and stay soft. So the last batch came out as hard crumbly balls. They still tasted good, so I took some to the office and my pirate took some to the lab (and kept them for himself instead of sharing, hehe!). So I got two batches off in the mail and have one to remake still.

JG&BW’s wedding was Oct. 11. My pirate went there for the bachelor party on the 9th, and the bride and I drove up together on the 10th. We stayed at a nice cabin that is owned by the parents of one of my pirate’s former coworkers. Wedding was awesome, almost everyone danced for the whole time, the dance floor was packed - memorable moments: being Rick Rolled, the Conga line and the teenage boy hiding under a table to avoid participating in it. We hung out and had brunch buffet together.

The gang’s joint birthday bbq was the 18th. And as always, awesome food and great company. I almost forgot that I was just getting over a cold. I think maybe the tequila helped get rid of my sore throat. :P

November 1 J&SP had a Halloween/Day of the Dead party, the monster finger cookies were especially tasty. We got in some zombie flux which was fun. Also earlier that day we checked out a possible wedding location in Fairfield, but we ended up deciding on the golf course in Santa Rosa.

And I’m down to 22 emails in my inbox finally. Yay!

Mid November

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

This weekend we mostly just got chores and errands done. Sunday we had a late lunch with Meow at the new pizza place (Vito’s). The margherita pizza was ok, too much tomato and not enough basil. My pirate had a slice of the combo and that was better. Their garlic fries were really good, and my pirate was happy they gave us the buffalo sauce on the side for him to dip them in.

After that we checked out The Naturalist, I got a couple ornaments and a pair of star shaped crystal earrings. Plus we took pictures of their window displays as reference for possible wedding donations. Around 4pm my pirate went back to work and Meow and I went to see Madagascar 2. I think I liked it as much as the first one, and as always the penguins were awesome.

When I got home we worked on baking everything cookies for me to mail out. The first two batches went fine, but the third one I managed to forget the sugar. They actually tasted ok, but the stayed in tight balls instead of spreading out, and were all crumbly instead of gooey. My coworkers loved them though.

More email cleaning:
Arden Hills Resort Club and Spa’s
Open House!
Sunday, June 1, 2008
10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
1220 Arden Hills Lane
Sacramento, CA 95864
– The Villa was gorgeous, but they had no options for if it rained. Plus their reception rooms weren’t that great and they do a bunch of weddings on one day and they cost more than I wanted to spend anyway.

RM&MG came to visit in June. :D

J&LN baby shower, on Saturday, July 26th, followed by a BBQ at C&WC’s house for all the old IDAV folks.

File Cleaning & Priorities

file-cleaning-priorities

So I came really close to spending a ridiculous amount on postage so I could get stamps to match my save the date postcards. Then I realized that most will get trashed or at best cut apart and used as ornaments like I intend. Spending more on stamps is just silly.

I also am looking through my old archive fold and cleaning out stuff like this hardware list for my first computer:
Acer Aspire P/N 91,AB576,Mo5
S/N 2601404720
DeskJet 672C
Iomega 250 Zip Parallel
Intuos Graphics Tablet
4GByte Hard Disk
128MB + 32MB

My daily gratitude is that I get paid time off to donate blood (2 hours per month), and that having Total cereal almost every morning keeps my iron up enough to allow me to do so. An hour or two snuggled up warm (to keep my blood moving) and quietly reading my magazines is always nice.

And some email cleaning:
Cute video my pirate found for me that put a smile on my face: Dancing Matt

Happy Hair

happy-hair

So I just realized today that this has been a really good year for me as far as growing my hair out goes. First a coworker taught me how to twist it up, and I love how it feels so I wear my hair that way daily at work. Then a friend suggested I try parting my hair to one side or the other to give it more body. I haven’t tried that since junior high when it didn’t work at all. Now that I have a great hair cut though it actually works really well. I can part it to either side and I like how it looks and it’s not in my eyes so much. I don’t think I’ve let my hair part down the middle since discovering that.

On another front - we’ve found our location and I’m working on the contract now. Yay!

Sweet Salsa

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

After a month off (sick, migraine, 8:30am Wednesday meeting x 2) I finally got back out to salsa night with LR. We had a great time as usual. I really need to practice spotting for super fast turns, I can make them, but I can’t spot so I end up dizzy and can’t do as many in a row. And I really want to be able to after watching one woman do turns nonstop as she also rotated around her partner, it looked really awesome.

More inbox cleaning:

April 24th - a friend’s father passed away. :(
(I made cookies for him & emailed, but I still haven’t sent the physical card yet.)

My brother, pirate and I drove up to see papa for Memorial Day Weekend. It’s always good to spend time with papa & his wife, and they have a beautiful place with lots of wildlife.

May 2nd we went Cafe Italia for dinner and then to Iron Man to celebrate JP’s birthday. The movie was actually really enjoyable.

We went to San Jose on the 3rd to hang with his folks, and also so we could go straight to >
May 4th to celebrate Meow’s 40th we went to the Maker Faire in San Mateo. Lots of neat stuff to see, but I think once was enough for me (it usually is for any big crowded event type thing). I think we went to Koi Palace afterwards for Dim Sum. It was ok, but the place stank from all the different weird foods. I did find a new vegetable to love, the “Chinese broccoli,” the real name I can’t remember. Very tasty though!

For my sweetie (since he loves Colbert, and I used to go to cuddle parties):
Colbert on Cuddle Parties

Mother’s Day weekend we went home to Santa Rosa so I could spend the day with my mom. I’m not sure if that’s the weekend we went and took a tour of V. Sattui Winery. It was gorgeous but way out of our price range.

Helped MM move into his new place in the bay area at the end of May. Now that so many of my friends have moved to the bay already, I’m really looking forward to getting to join them.

Last Year As A Twenty-Something

last-year-as-a-twenty-something

Le sigh. 29 on the 6th. Went to dinner at Texas Roadhouse on Saturday the 5th with a bunch of friends and had the brownie sundae - yum! And on Sunday I went on the Jelly Belly factory tour with family and my pirate & Meow, followed by dinner at Red Lobster. :) Fun times! I stil love the dancing robots.

The following weekend I got to see some of my other really good friends down in San Diego. I was sent to a weekend work training in LA, so my pirate and I drove down together. I got to meet more of his family and he got to meet more of my friends. Plus the work training was super useful, so just a great trip overall.
“We’re driving down the 10th, I have class at the Anaheim Convention Center the 11-12 and we’re planning to head down to S.D. on the 13th and drive home on the 14th.”

My pirate sent me this great video: Music and Life - Alan Watts

EA graduated from vet school! (And wow is the cute card I got her going to be late…once I find it again in the den.)

I get some interesting stuff on the TSP (Technology Support Program) email list at work. Like this:
SCIENTISTS LINKS LAPTOPS TO DETECT EARTHQUAKES - Scientists at UC Irvine are working on a project that harnesses data from laptops to help analyze seismic activity
Agam Shah, Washington Post, April 4, 2008
URL: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/04/AR2008040400041.html
Related: Quake-Catcher Network - http://qcn.ucr.edu/ ; BOINC - http://qcn-web.stanford.edu/Join.html
Excerpt: Elizabeth Cochran sensed an opportunity to save lives when she realized laptops can be used as seismometers to detect earthquakes. Many laptops have an accelerometer, a sensor that detects motion and free fall, and that can be used to detect the intensity of earthquakes when a laptop shakes. The Quake-Catcher Network (QCN) is a project that harnesses seismic data from sensors on Internet-connected laptops in different locations to help capture earthquakes. When the laptop isn’t being used, special software on laptops collects sensor data, which along with the laptop’s location, is sent over the Internet to an earthquake data repository where the data is analyzed.

Northern Harrier Hovering

I see the females around on a regular basis, but I’ve only seen a male once - he was gorgeous! I didn’t even realize till I looked it up that it was a Harrier/Marsh Hawk. We were driving on the northern causeway either on the way to or from Costo and he was sitting on a fence post looking away over the fields. He was such a gorgeous light silver, I wish we’d been able to stop and get a photo.

Email cleaning - February & March

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Feb 14 & 15 - There was a really big wind storm (not fun to bike in!!!) and power went out too - both days. Turns out once it was because of this: “Per KCRA 3 news this morning, E Street in Davis will be closed at some time today to remove a very large tree that’s leaning against the Zen-Toro restaurant.” And once was: “http://www.kcra.com/news/15307579/detail.html
The kcra channel has a slightly more interesting story - overhead lines downed by a crane on a barge AND a car hitting a West Sac. power pole at about the same time.”

Feb 28 - I found out today that my headaches really are migraines. But for now
the dr.wants me to stick with the meds I have (I had one I hadn’t
tried yet) and see how things go. Fun fun. So I’m logging everything I
can think of to track and see if I can figure out my triggers.
- Rikshaw on Broadway for $1 sushi night with the JCC crew.

I don’t recall much of March other than quals + paper + interviews for my pirate = lots of stress for both of us.

MT’s going away dinner (she moved to hawaii) at Meow’s house March 10th.

Pizza dinner with JG - we had three coupons for free personal pizza’s from donating blood - on the 14th.

March 24 - My old youth pastor agreed to officiate at the wedding. :D (So I guess I do have a bit more done than I thought.)

March 27 - Dinner with the JCC gang at Burgers and Brews. Good food and company as usual. :) TM was in Davis for the career faire, hence the weeknight dinner.

Thankfulness

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

I know this has been around for ages, but it’s still a good reminder and makes me smile:

I am thankful: for the wife
Who says it’s hot dogs tonight,
Because she is home with me,
And not out with someone else.

For the husband
Who is on the sofa
Being a couch potato,
Because he is home with me
And not out at the bars.

For the teenager
Who is complaining about doing dishes
Because it means she is at home,
Not on the streets.

For the taxes I pay
Because it means
I am employed.

For the mess to clean after a party
Because it means I have
Been surrounded by friends.

For the clothes that fit a little too snug
Because it means
I have enough to eat.

For my shadow that watches me work
Because it means
I am out in the sunshine

For a lawn that needs mowing,
Windows that need cleaning,
And gutters that need fixing
Because it means I have a home.

For all the complaining
I hear about the government
Because it means
We have freedom of speech.

For the parking spot
I find at the far end of the parking lot
Because it means I am capable of walking
And I have been blessed with transportation.

For my huge heating bill
Because it means
I am warm.

For the lady behind me in church
Who sings off key because it means
I can hear.

For the pile of laundry and ironing
Because it means
I have clothes to wear.

For weariness and aching muscles
At the end of the day
Because it means I have been
Capable of working hard.

For the alarm that goes off
In the early morning hours
Because it means I am alive.

And finally, for too much e-mail
Because it means I have
Friends who are thinking of me.

Catch up

catch-up

I’m back to blogging yet again (and cleaning out my email inbox - 165 emails!) and getting caught up.

Wow, first went dress shopping January 12th. Didn’t get anything else done other than finding the dress until October. So much for having 2 years to plan! Tomorrow leaves me with 365 days….

I found and emailed this Feb. 12 and thought I’d blogged it too, but I guess not since a search didn’t turn it up:
I know about chocolate and some plants, this is the first I’ve heard
that xylitol is dangerous for pets so I thought I’d pass it on to the
pet owners/caretakers I know of. Especially since it’s becoming more
common in gums and as a sugar substitute for baking.

“Of special risk to pets are gums or candies sweetened with the
not-so-sweet sugarish alternative known as xylitol. Ingestion of this
substance can result in hypoglycemia, which can lead to depression,
loss of coordination, and even seizures.”
