Sunday March 1 Mocha was throwing up. It was unusual for him, but not so unusual for a cat. He was still doing so the next day though, so we took him to the vet. Over the course of the week we found out he was diabetic, had pancreatitus and was suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis. He hadn’t eaten since Sunday, so on Thursday and Friday morning we had to force feed him. He still wasn’t recovering by the time we went to see the vet on Friday, so we ended up admitting him to the UC Davis Vet Med emergency clinic. He improved drastically under their care and was able to come home Tuesday night. Since he started eating on his own once he was home we were able to avoid having to give him a feeding tube. On Thursday he got his catheter out. He’s been steadily recovering and returning to normal, though I wouldn’t mind if he kept his super cuddliness (even more so than he used to be). Khalua has been pissy ever since he returned. I think she went from being crazy lonely to enjoying having all the attention to herself.
So now I’m just testing Mo daily for ketones to be sure he’s not going into ketoacidocis again and giving him his daily shot of insulin. Next week he’ll go in for a blood test to see how he’s doing and decide if he should stay on this type of insulin or switch to a twice daily kind.
