Mocha Progress

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Mr. Mo held fairly steady through the weekend. His kidney values finally plateaued so he didn’t have to have dialysis today thankfully. He’s on track for a CT scan in the morning and then surgery. He’s probably not going to pass whatever it is since he hasn’t already, so we’re just hoping surgery goes well and we can get him home in a few days.

Of course Khalua is loving having me to herself, the brat.

Other than that, my mom & brother came to visit Thursday/Friday. We went to IHOP for breakfast/lunch, then to see Race to Witch Mountain, which was fun. Then we got tasty frozen yogurt and my brother and I rented and watched Twilight. I’m curious about the books now after reading it. I enjoyed it despite the naysayers (one of whom was thrilled to not have to watch it).

Last Year As A Twenty-Something

last-year-as-a-twenty-something

Le sigh. 29 on the 6th. Went to dinner at Texas Roadhouse on Saturday the 5th with a bunch of friends and had the brownie sundae – yum! And on Sunday I went on the Jelly Belly factory tour with family and my pirate & Meow, followed by dinner at Red Lobster. :) Fun times! I stil love the dancing robots.

The following weekend I got to see some of my other really good friends down in San Diego. I was sent to a weekend work training in LA, so my pirate and I drove down together. I got to meet more of his family and he got to meet more of my friends. Plus the work training was super useful, so just a great trip overall.
“We’re driving down the 10th, I have class at the Anaheim Convention Center the 11-12 and we’re planning to head down to S.D. on the 13th and drive home on the 14th.”

My pirate sent me this great video: Music and Life – Alan Watts

EA graduated from vet school! (And wow is the cute card I got her going to be late…once I find it again in the den.)

I get some interesting stuff on the TSP (Technology Support Program) email list at work. Like this:
SCIENTISTS LINKS LAPTOPS TO DETECT EARTHQUAKES – Scientists at UC Irvine are working on a project that harnesses data from laptops to help analyze seismic activity
Agam Shah, Washington Post, April 4, 2008
URL: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/04/AR2008040400041.html
Related: Quake-Catcher Network – http://qcn.ucr.edu/ ; BOINC – http://qcn-web.stanford.edu/Join.html
Excerpt: Elizabeth Cochran sensed an opportunity to save lives when she realized laptops can be used as seismometers to detect earthquakes. Many laptops have an accelerometer, a sensor that detects motion and free fall, and that can be used to detect the intensity of earthquakes when a laptop shakes. The Quake-Catcher Network (QCN) is a project that harnesses seismic data from sensors on Internet-connected laptops in different locations to help capture earthquakes. When the laptop isn’t being used, special software on laptops collects sensor data, which along with the laptop’s location, is sent over the Internet to an earthquake data repository where the data is analyzed.

Email cleaning – February & March

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Feb 14 & 15 – There was a really big wind storm (not fun to bike in!!!) and power went out too – both days. Turns out once it was because of this: “Per KCRA 3 news this morning, E Street in Davis will be closed at some time today to remove a very large tree that’s leaning against the Zen-Toro restaurant.” And once was: “http://www.kcra.com/news/15307579/detail.html
The kcra channel has a slightly more interesting story – overhead lines downed by a crane on a barge AND a car hitting a West Sac. power pole at about the same time.”

Feb 28 – I found out today that my headaches really are migraines. But for now
the dr.wants me to stick with the meds I have (I had one I hadn’t
tried yet) and see how things go. Fun fun. So I’m logging everything I
can think of to track and see if I can figure out my triggers.
– Rikshaw on Broadway for $1 sushi night with the JCC crew.

I don’t recall much of March other than quals + paper + interviews for my pirate = lots of stress for both of us.

MT’s going away dinner (she moved to hawaii) at Meow’s house March 10th.

Pizza dinner with JG – we had three coupons for free personal pizza’s from donating blood – on the 14th.

March 24 – My old youth pastor agreed to officiate at the wedding. :D (So I guess I do have a bit more done than I thought.)

March 27 – Dinner with the JCC gang at Burgers and Brews. Good food and company as usual. :) TM was in Davis for the career faire, hence the weeknight dinner.

catch-up

I’m back to blogging yet again (and cleaning out my email inbox – 165 emails!) and getting caught up.

Wow, first went dress shopping January 12th. Didn’t get anything else done other than finding the dress until October. So much for having 2 years to plan! Tomorrow leaves me with 365 days….

I found and emailed this Feb. 12 and thought I’d blogged it too, but I guess not since a search didn’t turn it up:
I know about chocolate and some plants, this is the first I’ve heard
that xylitol is dangerous for pets so I thought I’d pass it on to the
pet owners/caretakers I know of. Especially since it’s becoming more
common in gums and as a sugar substitute for baking.

“Of special risk to pets are gums or candies sweetened with the
not-so-sweet sugarish alternative known as xylitol. Ingestion of this
substance can result in hypoglycemia, which can lead to depression,
loss of coordination, and even seizures.”

Dynamite

dynamite

So I’m totally loving telecommuting. The week of migraines I would normally have ended up being only one tiny one that threatened and I squashed with my imitrex before it got full grown. Also, my fatigue seems to be gone for now too. No more wanting to nap at lunch time, and falling asleep 5 minutes before my alarm goes off that it’s time to leave. Plus I’m always on time now instead of anywhere from 0 to 20 minutes late. If I’m running late I can just brush my teeth while I check my email. Khalua seems super happy too, she’s spent most mornings on my lap or next to me, and she never used to be much of a lap kitty before unless you had food she wanted.

We watched part of Napoleon Dynamite with a friend last night, there were a couple amusing parts, but for the most part it was pretty boring. Supposedly the best part is the end, but it didn’t seem worth going through the whole thing to get there. That reminds me that I borrowed Juno from SP, I need to watch that and return it – and then borrow their staple gun to upgrade the kitties’ food platform with a cover so it’s easier to clean and the bowls don’t slide as much.

On the wedding front, I think we’ve picked our location finally. We’re just waiting on a couple more answers to questions. I need to get all the addresses together and start working on the save the dates now that I have the materials I need and we have a place. Plus, as of tomorrow we only have one year left!

telecommuting

So after 6 years of effort… this week begins my first full week of partial telecommuting. :D YAY!

Wednesday we had dinner with J&BW and a couple of their friends. The first time we’ve hung out since their wedding.

Thursday we went to the book launch at the Melting Pot in Rocklin to celebrate our anniversary early and get a copy of the book free with dinner. Yummy, but a bit too much food. I even liked the cheese fondue we got. Especially with the celery strangely enough.

Saturday we got our hair cut and my pirate got his highlighted with blue. It looks really good. Then we went and had lunch at Coco’s since I love their chicken tortilla soup. We picked up JW & PH and headed out to Fairfield to check out the Fairfield Community Center. It was nice but pending getting a contract we’re happy with, I think we’re going to go with the Oakmont Golf Club. After that we headed over to J&SP’s place for a Halloween party. Yummy food as always, good conversation and we played some zombie flux and uno, followed by some Wii Cranium.

Today is our one year first engagement anniversary (tomorrow being the second and our 2 year anniversary). :D

Love Languages

love-languages

I do own and have read this book. I think it’s actually pretty useful. Sometimes the golden rule doesn’t work for love.

The Five Love Languages

My primary love language is probably
Physical Touch
with a secondary love language being
Words of Affirmation.

Complete set of results

Physical Touch: 10
Words of Affirmation: 9
Quality Time: 6
Acts of Service: 5
Receiving Gifts: 0

Information

Unhappiness in relationships, according to Dr. Gary Chapman, is often due to the fact that we speak different love languages. Sometimes we don’t understand our partner’s requirements, or even our own. We all have a “love tank” that needs to be filled in order for us to express love to others, but there are different means by which our tank can be filled, and there are different ways that we can express love to others.

Speaking of Chocolates

speaking-of-chocolates

A coworker brought in some espresso truffles from Starbucks. They came in purple wrappers with no branding and she didn’t bring the package in, so I don’t know who actually makes them, but they were fabulous! A rich chocolate flavor, and the coffee flavor was as strong as it could be without edging over into being yucky. Mmmmmm. I want more! They disappeared fast.

And Google to the rescue! They were: Milk Chocolate Caffè Mocha Truffles though the reviewer on that site didn’t care for them.

More Chocolately Goodness

Ghirardelli Intense Dark Citrus Sunset (60% Cacao) – This is what I wanted the Newtree one to be like, only this is more orangy than lemon. The texture was just right, and the orange was sweet and tangy but didn’t overwhelm the chocolate flavor. I’m not sure I tasted the caramel crunch, but it did give it a nice little crunch.

Lindt Excellence Toffee Crunch Milk Extra Fine – I split this with MM, sooo yummy! So their milk bars can be good too. I just don’t get why their truffles are so bad. I actually tried one again recently thinking maybe I was remembering wrong. Nope! They still fall in the “not worth wasting calories on” category. This bar however I’d happily get again, smooth, creamy and great toffee crunch and flavor.
